In 2017, RER published its Birds of the Kampar Peninsula: An Annotated Checklist, detailing the presence of 299 rare and endangered birds in the Kampar Peninsula peatland restoration forest area and surrounds. This includes the critically endangered Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil), listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Compiled by ecologists at RER, the checklist is a record of all the bird species that have been identified as of June 2017.

Restoring Today’s Forest For Tomorrow Needs

Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) is a long-term ecosystem restoration project that began in 2013, with the granting of a 60-year ecosystem restoration license for 20,265 ha of degraded ecosystem forest from the Indonesian Government. Four years later, RER now consists of 149,807 ha on the Kampar Peninsula and Padang Island in Riau province, Sumatra. RER applies a four-point restoration approach of Protect, Assess, Restore, Manage.

Crucial to the success of the ecosystem restoration programme is the support and collaboration of RER’s multiple stakeholders. Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is an international NGO established in 1903. FFI acts to conserve threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take into account human needs. As RER’s technical partner, FFI manages key elements of the project related to biodiversity, climate and communities
