Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) is a multi-party program to restore and protect 150,000 hectares of peatland in Sumatra, Indonesia. Backed by a 10-year US$100m investment from pulp and paper company APRIL Group, RER is working to restore this vital ecosystem, which has been degraded by years of encroachment and illegal logging.

RER is home to hundreds of species, some of which are considered to be endangered, such as the Sumatran Tiger. Largely unmapped before the program began, RER is being explored by teams of scientists who continue to make exciting discoveries, while conservation teams replant degraded forests.

RER also works with local communities to ensure they benefit from the conservation, while providing them with skills and equipment they need to grow their economy sustainably.
